A plaid skirt is made of woolen cloth with checked pattern.  Any material woven in different colored yarns in a cross barred pattern is known as plaid. In Scotland a rectangular woolen scarf of checked pattern is used over the left shoulder by the Scottish highlanders. Plaid skirts are usually used by the Scottish people. It is known to be their traditional costume.

Plaid skirt can be cone or tube shaped garment that hangs from the waist or hips. The hemline of the skirt is floor length or very short known as micro. Each one wears the skirt as per one’s personal taste or the natural conceptions of modesty. Very often the cut of the skirt is influenced   by the current fashion. Sometimes skirt looking plaid panels are used on with shorts, swimsuits and leggings. The Kilt which is a traditional garment   in Scotland and Ireland also consists of a plaid skirt. A plaid skirt can also be made of a single piece of material which can be draped at the waist and tied. Plaid skirts are part of the western culture.

The Use of plaid skirts

Today plaid skirts are used by tennis players. These skirts also form part of uniforms of certain schools. They can be used for a dressy occasion or as  casual  wear. They can be stitched in different ways  such as  with knife  pleats, box pleats, accordion pleats, cartridge pleats and fortuny pleats. A common way of wearing pleated skirts is by layering them with other pieces of wardrobe.
